Local students attend STAR program

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº recently hosted its first Health STAR (Student Training and Access to Resources) program. Over a three-day period, 35 area high school students with an interest in healthcare professions spent time at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº and Titus Regional Medical Center (pictured). Students had the opportunity to learn more about the educational†requirements†for various healthcare fields, shadow working†practitioners and participate in real-world scenarios using simulators.

Team Arise gives ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº veteran scholarship

Michael Brown (left) recently gave $500 to the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Foundation on behalf of his organization, Team Arise. The funds will provide a scholarship to ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº students who are veterans or children of veterans. Dr. Jonathan McCullough, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Vice President for Advancement, is pictured receiving the gift. Students take $29 Food Stamp Challenge

This semester, †students in Sarah Rainey's†ethics, †philosophy, †state and federal government courses are engaging in the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº $29 Food Stamp Challenge to raise awareness regarding poverty, altruism, and policy.


Working in groups, students design a meal plan that meets at least 75% of nutritional guidelines through the USDA Super Tracker.

Carroll Shelby Foundation gives $25,000 for ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº scholarships

The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Foundation recently received a $25,000 gift from the Carroll Shelby Foundation. The donation will provide scholarships for students in the Carroll Shelby Automotive Technology Program at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº. Dr. Jonathan McCullough (second from right), ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Vice President for Advancement, accepted the gift.

Psi Beta inducts new members

Artist reception scheduled for Oct. 20

The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Art Department will host an artist reception Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Attendees will have the†opportunity†to view†Refined by Fire, a display of pottery by Karen Lowrey of Longview. The artist will meet†with guests, discuss her work and take questions. The exhibit will be on display through Oct.

Mary Smith wins Walter B. Cooper Memorial Scholarship

Mary Smith, a sophomore at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº, was recently awarded her sixth scholarship of the school year. Smith, of Gilmer, was presented the Walter B. Cooper Memorial Scholarship at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Leadership Conference October 11 at Texas A&M University College Station. In order to receive this award, students must have an outstanding academic record and exhibit characteristics of a well-rounded member of Phi Theta Kappa and the community at large. Dr.
