The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Art Department held an artist reception featuring local artist Skinny Trammell on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The Lone Star resident's hand-crafted musical instruments were a featured exhibit in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts foyer.†Skinny is 84 years old and fishes every day, makes musical instruments, and tells a few yarns now and then. The instruments on display at the Whatey include guitars, fiddles, ukuleles, and dobros.
Evening police academy begins Oct. 14
The Northeast Police Academy at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº is offering an evening police academy beginning Monday, Oct. 14 at the main ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº campus.†The academy runs through May 13. This program is specifically designed for working adults who are interested in pursuing a†career in law enforcement.
The academy will meet from 5-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and every first and third Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Northeast Texas poetry contest winners announced
The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Honors program recently held the sixth annual Northeast Texas Poetry Contest. The competition was open to both students and the general public. Winning works were presented at a poetry reading in the Whatley Center foyer on Friday, Aug. 30.
Entries could be any style or length, but were asked to focus on some aspect of life in Northeast Texas. Contest judges were Professors Chuck Hamilton, Anna Ingram, and Jim Swann. Cash prizes were provided by Friends of ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Honors. The winners were as follows:

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº celebrated the service of Jerry Massey, a long-time member of the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº board of Trustees, with a retirement reception on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Massey (left), of Pittsburg, recently retired from the board after 18 years of service. He and his wife, Susan, are retiring to the Houston area in order to be closer to family. Other members of the college board, faculty, staff, and community gathered in the Whatley Center foyer to honor Massey. Travel to George W Bush Library with ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº
Want to get away for a day? Consider joining the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Continuing Education Department on a travel excursion to the George W. Bush Library in Dallas. The trip is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24 and will include round-trip travel to Dallas by motor coach and the cost of admission.
The coach will leave from the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Hanson-Sewell Center in Pittsburg at 7 a.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $60 for adults, $55 for seniors (62 and older), and $55 for high school and college students.
Stephen Milburn wins STAR Scholarship
Stephen Milburn, a ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº student from Mount Pleasant, was one of six recipients of the Dr. Mary Hood STAR Scholarship.†The scholarship honors returning community college students in the Texas region who show outstanding promise as leaders and as scholars.†The recipients were announced at the recent Texas Honors Institute held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, TX and recognized onstage.
Eagles Athletics helps Habitat for Humanity
On August 24 100+ ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Eagles swooped down and landed on six Habitat for Humanity lots on 9th street in Mount Pleasant. Directed by coaches Josh Stewart, Shane Wedd, Jessica Keith, Donovan Dowling, and Kayla King; as well as Habitat volunteers Tim Hart and Ronny White, the students attacked neglected homesites. Members of the softball, baseball and soccer teams (including coaches) spent the day clearing the lots of rotting trees, briars, and other assorted trash. The team was provided with a barbecue lunch by Ronny Farmer.

The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Eagles Softball team will host the first†annual†Coed Slowpitch Tournament on†September 14, 2013 at the Heritage Park fields in Mount Pleasant. †The entry fee is $150 per team in this 7/3 co-ed tournament. Games will be timed at 55 minutes with the championship game lasting a full seven innings.

Ron Clinton to perform solo piano recital at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº
Dr. Ron Clinton, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Executive Vice President for Instruction, will perform a solo piano recital on Sunday, Sept. 15 at†2:30 p.m. at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts.†Tickets to the concerts are $10 for adults and $5 for children and ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº students with a current ID. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº students.
The concert will feature selections by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin,†Gershwin,†and Liszt.
