Honors Northeast recognizes Drs. Jim and Paula Archer for their support

For the 10th straight year, Doctors Jim and Paula Archer hosted the annual Fall Roundup for Honors Northeast. Honors students, professors, and administrators of ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôºâ€ gathered at the Archer?s Lone Star Cattle Company Ranch September 10 for the event. Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director (pictured right) presented the couple with a plaque commemorating some of the scenes of their interactions with students.

Dr. Jim Archer is a Professor Emeritus at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº, having served as chemistry professor for 25 years.

Honors Northeast welcomes 2016-2017 scholars

The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Honors Program is pleased to announce its Honors Students for the 2016-2017 school year. This includes†10†Presidential Scholars and†15†Honors Scholars.

Honors Northeast†was founded in the spring of 2007. Geared to attract top high school graduates and college students, the program has prospered thanks to a network of loyal supporters both in and out of the college. Each year, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº honors students have attended and presented research at the Great Plains Honors Council and the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Honors Northeast wraps filming for fifth movie

The scholars of Honors Northeast completed filming their fifth feature-length movie last week in Nacogdoches.†The subject of this year?s film was the end of the Texas Cherokee and the transformation of Sam Houston. The project was researched, written, directed, acted and produced by students in the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº honors program with the support of faculty, staff and community members.

Texas Heritage National Bank gives ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Presidential Scholarship

Texas Heritage National Bank recently presented a Presidential Scholarship to Emmalea Shaw, a sophomore at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº.†The gift will cover Shaw?s academic expenses at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº for the 2016-2017 academic year.†This is the first privately-funded†gift of its kind†that Honors Northeast has received.

Shaw had a stellar first year at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº. She won a third-place $150 Caldwell Award from the State of Texas, and a $200 poetry award.

Honors Northeast seeks entries for poetry contest

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº and Honors Northeast†recently†announced a call for original poems to enter the ninth†annual Northeast Texas Poetry Contest. The judges will be looking for poems that can accent or enliven our sense of the surroundings, people, the culture, and/or the history of Northeast Texas. Adult winners will take home $200 for first place and $50 for second place. Full-time student winners will receive $400 for first place, $300 for second, $200 for third, and $100 for fourth. All ages are welcome to enter the contest. Any genre of poem, and at any length, can compete.

Texas Heritage National Bank gives ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Honors scholarship

Texas Heritage National Bank recently gave $4,000 to the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Foundation. The funds will be used to sponsor a Presidential Scholar in Honors Northeast, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº?s nationally-recognized honors program. Two ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº students win prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓÆµÓ°Ôº Presidential Scholars, Jessica Velazquez of Mount Vernon and Angelica Fuentes of Mount Pleasant were recently awarded Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. These prestigious awards cover up to $40,000†annually at a university of the student?s choice for up to three†years. Only†75 students were selected from more than 2,000 top applicants in a very competitive process for this national honor.
