For the second year in a row, Texas Heritage National Bank has sponsored a full scholarship for a ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ Presidential Scholar. Cassidy Watkins, of Daingerfield, has been named the 2017-2018 Texas Heritage National Bank Scholar.

The scholarship covers tuition, fees and books for Watkins? sophomore year at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ.

?This kind of privately funded, full academic scholarship gives dynamic students like Watkins time advantages, and a route to leverage greater awards,? Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director, said.

The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society has selected Chesney Davis to receive a $1,500 scholarship as the 2017 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar.

A mechanical engineering major, Davis is a Priefert Manufacturing engineering intern, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ Presidential Honors Scholar and the Texas Regional Vice President for Phi Theta Kappa.† In addition, Davis serves as a ?Supplemental Instruction?

For the 10th straight year,†Cypress Bank†has presented a MacBook computer for the use of ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ honors students.†This year?s recipient is Jordan Whelchel.† He is a recent graduate of Daingerfield High School who already has become active in Honors film and Phi Theta Kappa activities at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ.†Whelchel plans to major in physics.

Cypress, the oldest Camp-County-based bank, has four locations in Mount Pleasant, Pittsburg, Lone Star and Commerce.

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ students Brenda Godoy and Rachel Jordan received recognition as Texas STAR Scholars at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Regional Honors Institute held at Schreiner?s University July 21-23. They were two of eleven recipients from throughout the state of Texas.† Both serve as Vice-Presidents of Alpha Mu Chi, ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ?s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Both are Presidential Scholars in Honors Northeast.

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ and Honors Northeast†recently†announced a call for original poems to enter the annual Northeast Texas Poetry Contest.The judges will be looking for poems that can accent or enliven our sense of the surroundings, people, the culture, and/or the history of Northeast Texas. Adult winners will take home $200 and $50 for first and second place.

Two ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ graduates, Ryan-Rose Mendoza and Melody Mott, were named 2017 Terry Scholars and received the prestigious Terry Transfer Scholarship. Selection is based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and financial need. Recipients also must have applied and been accepted to a Terry Affiliated University within the state of Texas.

The Terry Scholarship Program was born of Howard and Nancy Terry?s desire to help young people help themselves. The Terrys believed, in the long term, that a university ? like the state it represents ?

Two ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ Presidential Scholars recently won $100 for their performance in challenging honors seminars. Presley McClendon, who graduated this past May, was the sophomore who took all three honors seminars at ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ, and ended with the highest GPA.† Chesney Davis won his award as an honors freshman, ranking number one in the Stat-Psych Honors Seminar taught this past spring by Dr. Karyn Skaar and Dr. Paula Wilhite.

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ recently awarded the second annual Bonnie Spencer Awards for excellence in historical research. The prize is awarded to students who write the top United States History papers for the school year. First place ($100) went to Alondra Ferretiz of Mount Pleasant and second place ($50) went to Sarah Craig of Hughes Springs.

ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ is somewhat unique in that is requires all students to complete a research paper during their United States History course.

Honors Northeast hosted the ninth annual McGraw-Hill Poster Contest April 28 in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Nearly 20 students competed in the event, where they presented posters summarizing their research on a wide variety of academic topics. William Jones, a sophomore Presidential Scholar from Mount Pleasant, won first place.

Texas Heritage National Bank recently presented the ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ Foundation with $4,000 to sponsor a Presidential Scholar in Honors Northeast. The ÂÒÉ«ÎÞÂëÈËÆÞÊÓƵӰԺ honors program was founded in 2007 and has attracted top high school graduates from around the region.
